Melbourne Heart FC is an Australian professional football (soccer) club based in Melbourne, Victoria which will be the 11th official franchise in the A-League. The club was formed in 2008, and was awarded an A-League licence in 2009 to compete in the 2010-2011 season of the A-League. The team is negotiating to play home games at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

In October 2009, an online competition held by the Herald Sun gave the public the opportunity to submit their preferences for the name of the new Melbourne team. The preferred names were released on the Herald Sun website on November 13, 2009. The four options were 'Sporting Melbourne FC', 'Melburnians', 'Melbourne Revolution' and 'Melbourne Heart FC'. Some pondered if 'Revolution' had some context considering its intimation to the Eureka Stockade, the closest Australia has come to revolution.

The name of the new club was to be announced before the end of 2009, but this was delayed until early 2010 due to AFL objections to the use of the words Melbourne, Football and Club in the name. The Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation expressed concern that the name Melbourne Heart was too similar to its annual Heart of Melbourne Appeal, and lodged a protest with IP Australia On January 22.

Initially, a colour scheme of either black and white, or red and white were the two options for the club. On November 11, 2009, the Herald Sun suggested that the options for the club's kit were red and white stripes, red and white hoops, red and white sash or an Ajax derivative with a red band down the middle, in part to replicate a Reds v Blues rivalry with Melbourne Victory that is common in so many football leagues, in particular European competitions.

The club's badge was lodged to IP Australia on the 29th of January by the FFA.On 2 February 2010, the name of the club was announced as Melbourne Heart FC.

The club's home strip was confirmed as Red/White stripes on 29 March, no details have yet been released regarding home shorts, home socks or any details regarding away kit.

John Aloisi signs for Melbourne Heart

Posted Image

The 34-year-old will spend one year as a player with the new A-League franchise before moving into a role developing the club's first National Youth League team for the 2011-12 season.

Along with Aloisi's unveiling today, Heart have also revealed their strip, red and white stripes.

"The main attraction was to be part of a huge club and I think this is going to be a massive club,'' Aloisi said today.

"Also, to get involved in coaching and to be in the sporting capital of Australia, if not the world.

"Everyone knows Melbourne is No.1 for sport - I want to be involved in that - and especially with a new club, we could build something here and I'm excited to start off with a new club because then I feel really part of it.''

Aloisi said the Heart would aim high in their first season, and were a chance to win the premiership.

"'m looking forward to it, firstly as a player playing and scoring goals and, hopefully, winning the championship because that's going to be our goal,'' he said.

Aloisi became part of Australian football legend when he scored the deciding penalty against Uruguay in Sydney in 2005 to earn Australia a place in the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

He has undergone a playing renaissance in the past 12 months, scoring 10 goals in only 16 starts to help Sydney FC to the A-League Premiership and Championship double.

He will team up with Heart coach John van't Schip, who helped mentor him when the pair were at Italian Serie A club Genoa together 16 years ago.

"Life can be very strange. I worked with John (Aloisi) while he was a young boy trying out at Genoa and we
established a very good relationship, so to be working with him again shows how interesting the world of
football is,"" van't Schip said.

"As a player, John has achieved much and has great qualities. He has great touch, a fantastic shot, brilliant vision and an ability to draw his teammates into the game, a combination of skills that is very difficult to find.

"I haven't been in Australia for long, but I know of John's important contribution to football here and know just how important this signing is for the club."

Van't Schip says he is confident Aloisi is capable of making the switch to coaching.

"There are not many footballers who have played in all three big European leagues (England, Italy and Spain),"" he said.

"It's amazing to think that John completed his first season in Italy while I finished the final one of my career.

"In my discussions with John, I have learned that he has a great understanding of football at a tactical level and I believe that he now has an opportunity to become a successful coach."

A-League supporters were engaged early to help name the new franchise in conjunction with the Herald Sun. van't Schip said "The supporters having an opportunity to name their football team is very special. Melbourne Heart was a personal favourite of mine from early on, so I'm pleased that the supporters have gone this way."

Melbourne Heart plans to attract a new market rather than trying to fit within an existing one and applauded the Victory for its trailblazing efforts. Peter Sidwell has commented that the Heart won't explicitly target former NSL fans, but stated that:

"I think they will just see we are a club who will try to integrate a form and shape of the game that will either appeal to them or not. We haven’t got a specific policy to say we are going to go after former NSL fans. We are mindful we have to deliver a game to the people that is attractive and entertaining and brings them back, so I feel we have a more global view in that regard."

Melbourne Heart director Joe Mirabella said the aim was for a "people's club...with strong links to grass-roots soccer and community groups...The idea is to have a team for the whole Melbourne public...I believe there is still a lot of people out there that have not gone to any A-League game, football people who will come out once the new team comes out." He also intimated supporters could purchase small stakes in the club in a move that would be a first for any A-League franchise.

Supporter led initiatives began in March 2009. A forum was created to allow supporters to interact with each other. In February 2010, once the name 'Melbourne Heart' was announced, a dedicated unofficial 'Melbourne Heart Supporters Forum' was launched.

On 10 February 2010, the first meeting of the 'Melbourne Heart FC Supporters Association' took place at The Imperial Hotel in Melbourne. The MHFCSA are an incorporated association dedicated to assist in the building of a fan base for Melbourne Heart and to act as the voice of the supporters to MHFC. On 1 March 2010, the MHFCSA took official ownership of the supporters forum.

Colosimo Drawn By Van ‘t Schip Factor

Posted Image

Posted Image

Melbourne Heart FC signing Simon Colosimo has revealed the attraction of playing under the auspices of former Dutch international John van ‘t Schip was a major factor in his decision to move back home.

After claiming the Hyundai A-League Premiership-Championship double with Sydney FC, Colosimo has signed a multi-year deal to return to Melbourne for the first time following a decade which has seen him ply his trade across the globe.

While Colosimo acknowledged the opportunity to return to his home town played a major role in the decision to join Heart, the 31-year-old admitted he was also drawn by the chance to play in a side commandeered by van ‘t Schip, who is a former European Champion.

“It’s been 10 years since I’ve been back in Melbourne and it’s a very exciting time at Melbourne Heart. There have been a lot of good players signed and great infrastructure, it’s looking like it is going to be a very good club,” he said.

“After working with Viteslav Lavicka at Sydney FC, knowing (Heart) had got a coach of (van ‘t Schip’s) pedigree, someone who has done what he has, mades a big difference.

“That’s the first question always asked, ‘who is the coach?’ or ‘who is it going to be?’ but there is a stability there that I’m looking forward to working under.”

However, with the 2010 World Cup looming ominously on the horizon, Colosimo will spend the remainder of the European season training at reigning Dutch Champion AZ Alkmaar, home of fellow Qantas Socceroo Brett Holman.

Following his starting appearance for the Qantas Socceroos against Indonesia last month, Colosimo remains firmly in contention to secure a seat on the plane to South Africa, and believes his stint with AZ will place him in good stead.

“(The short-term training deal) has worked well. Henk Duut’s based in Holland at the moment, Pim’s flying around the world trying to watch as many games as possible, but I want to be in the window and without being able to play games, Holland is going to give me that opportunity,” he said.

“We’ve seen with Jason (Culina) coming back to Australia what kind of player he is and what he brings to the field, if I can get a little bit of that (sharpness) over there, I’ll be in good shape.”

Heart's Home For 'Purists'

http://i.haymarket.n...mhslantetch.jpg

EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne Heart will target fans they call football purists as a way of expanding, not draining, the A-League’s supporter base.

Heart CEO Scott Munn told au.fourfourtwo.com that the club's strategy of bringing in a European coach is starting to attract fans he calls "purists".

"I think we've taken some very clear steps around particularly the positioning of the footballers and John van't Schip who's put together a super coaching department," Munn said.

"Certainly the vibe I get from going to local VPL games is that they see him very much as a technical coach with a fantastic credentials.

"The purists really love the coaching department and the players are along that [same] vein. So we have to stay true to that."

While the definition of a football purist is open to debate, what is clear, says Munn, is that some fans yet to embrace the A-League may now be tempted by Heart.

As the strategy of bringing in new fans rather than robbing from Melbourne Victory is starting to unfold, a pre-season friendly with Everton could be the ideal way to boost the club's fan-base.

The VPL with former NSL clubs could also be a pipeline for new fans as the club looks to exploit all the angles to fill the expected home ground at AAMI stadium.

"We're very clear that it's not about taking from the Victory. If we do that we haven't done anything for the game as a whole. We have to grow the game as a whole," said Munn.

"It's a club certainly that purists will like and that's important although we want to attract as many fans as we can."

Along similar lines is the football philosophy of van't Schip who says results-first isn't his style.

He says an attractive brand of football will yield results and is upbeat about Heart appearing in the A-League finals series of 2011.

"My expectations are that we are going to play a game that I would like to see played. That'll be the focus," he told au.fourfourtwo.com.

"A game with technical... nice touches, good passing, that's what I'll tell the boys, that'll be our goal.

"And as a result of that way of playing, the results in the A-League should come also. Not the other way around saying, 'I want results and see how we play later'.

"Hopefully that vision will bring us to a very high spot in the A-League."

This vision will be music to the ears of the FFA still reeling from the disasters up north at last season's expansion clubs Gold Coast United and North Queensland Fury.

The governing body will be desperate for this franchise to capture the imagination from the start and get the turnstiles clicking.

The vision is starting to filter through to the players with key Heart midfielder Wayne Srhoj buying into the Heart philosophy.

He added: "There's a real buzz around the place.

"When you've got the calibre of players that are coming here and coaches, yeah, it's real exciting."

Heart Sign Brazilian Alex

http://i.haymarket.n...311_mhbevel.jpg

MELBOURNE Heart today revealed they had signed Brazilian forward Alex Barbosa de Azevedo Terra on a multi-year deal to bring some samba flair to the fledgling club.

Known as Alex Terra, the 27-year-old has signed from Brazilian top flight football, becoming the side's second ever foreign signing, following the capture of former Dutch youth international Rutger Worm.

A versatile attacker who can lead the line, play out wide or as a shadow striker, Terra achieved his greatest success with South American giants Fluminense, claiming the Rio de Janeiro State championship in 2002 and 2005, completing the latter campaign as his club's top scorer.

Head Coach John van ‘t Schip was impressed by Terra after watching the Rio de Janeiro born star in action during his recent scouting trip to South America, immediately moving to secure his services for the Heart's inaugural Hyundai A-League campaign.

Van ‘t Schip is confident Terra possesses the necessary qualities to make a significant impact and aid building a highly competitive squad.

"I think it is important for Melbourne Heart FC to have a mix of different sorts of players- different nationalities, different qualities, different ages- but players who all want to play good football and win," he said.

"The club is fortunate to have recruited a South American player like Alex Terra, of such quality and of a good age, who is keen to play in Melbourne.

"He has a great first touch, great pace and an eye for goal, while most importantly, he is extremely versatile and capable of playing anywhere across the attacking line."

Alex Terra's performances with Fluminense won him a transfer to Portugal's Nacional before returning to his homeland where he signed for Ponte Preta in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, scoring a stunning 19 times in 24 games to earn a return to the top flight with Goias.

The diminutive front man recently completed a stint with Rio Branco in the Campeonato Paulista, the leading State Championship in the Brazilian football system featuring the likes of Ronaldo's Corinthians and Sao Paolo, scoring against giants Palmeiras in March to confirm his undoubted talent.
