A Tree is Best Measured When It's Down: On FIFA's Suspension of Nigeria

The official FIFA statement read: ”The FIFA emergency committee decided today, October 4 2010, to suspend the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect on account of government interference.”
As if crashing out of the World Cup wasn’t hard enough, supporters of the Super Eagles will be devastated to hear that FIFA has banned them from all competitions indefinitely. And yes, that includes the African Cup of Nations qualifying. Controversy is, of course, nothing new for Nigerian Football, who are the perennial underachievers of Africa, despite having a squad that should be the envy of the continent. Though arguments can and will certainly be made that FIFA is not punishing the governing body of Nigerian Football, but rather the players and fans, FIFA was right to take a stand. Let me explain.
After returning to Nigeria from an abysmal display in South Africa, Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan decided, himself, to ban the national side from all international competition for two years. Now, this obviously was not within his jurisdiction as all football associations are bound by FIFA, not by the country they actually belong to. This sounds odd that a President cannot control his own football team, but the intent is that having these delegations under FIFA’s law will prevent corruption. And the Nigerian FA has apparently been stocked with corruption.
Some accusations of corrupt activity within the FA, though firmly denied by Nigerian officials and yet to be proven, include:
* The Nigerian Football federation spending their six million dollars of World Cup funds with disregard.
* This includes: $250,000 to charter a faulty aircraft to fly the national team from London to South Africa and paying $800,000 in allowances to 220 delegates to the World Cup when only 49 were approved and incurring a $125,000 fine over a failed hotel deal in South Africa.
“During the period of suspension, the NFF will not be able to be represented in any regional, continental or international competitions, including at club level, and also not in friendly matches,” the FIFA statement also said.
Nigeria has always had great players that have failed to form a cohesive unit (sounds familiar, England…), but the real question here is will this destroy Nigerian football? Nigerian FIFA committee member executive Amos Adamu, NFF president Maigari, his vice-president, Mike Umeh as well as acting secretary-general of the NFF, Musa Amadu were brought before the court to account for their acts around the time of the World Cup. Also, FIFA investigated the decision by the Nigeria Sports Commission to force the NFF’s secretary-general Musa Amadu to stand down from his position. Needless to say, FIFA was less than pleased to hear about that. So what happens after all the backlash?
This suspension means Nigeria cannot compete in age-restricted youth competitions or international club competitions, although the country has no representatives left in this season’s African Champions League anyway. It also deprives the NFF of an annual FIFA-endorsed grant of $250,000.
Money is replaceable, but the suspension from youth competitions is the most devastating part of the list of punishments in my eyes. Nigerians love European football because their countrymen thrive in the best competitions in the world. Whether it be Jon Obi Mikel at Chelsea, Joseph Yobo at Fenerbahçe, or Dickson Etuhu at West Brom, all of these players were found through Nigeria’s youth system. Sadly, this ban could force these players’ talents to be lost by Nigeria.

Though Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan eventually took back his decision after the federation actually agreed to disband the team, FIFA continued to monitor events in the country. FIFA said outside interference, including court action, had been preventing Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) directors from doing their job appropriately. The NFF also blamed the government for a decision, that came from the Nigerian Minister of Sports, to start the Nigeria League without relegation from the previous season. Surely that particular decision had nothing to do with corruption…
“The suspension will be maintained until the court actions have ceased and the duly elected NFF Executive Committee is able to work without any interference.”
Indeed. Now no one can profit from the corruption of Nigerian football, as Nigerian football no longer exists. This will force the federation to start anew, and hopefully learn from its past mistakes. There’s a Nigerian saying that “A tree is best measured when it’s down.” Well, the Nigerians have hit rock bottom, and if they want their country’s rich love for football to go on, then they’ll have to show adversity and actually work together for once. But is this realistic? I’m not one to say it can’t happen, but what do you think?

Yang ni baru betul contoh pengurusan kewangan FA yg failed.
Masalah FA kita plak..
kurangnya inovasi di peringkat negeri utk menarik msk kewangan..
mungkin pengurusan diterajui org lama yg kurang idea.
Contohilah usaha2 FA Kelantan.
FA negeri kena kurangkan kebergantungan kt FAM.
Di peringkat pengurusan pusat plak (FAM)..
ntah apa ntah idea atau tindakan yg signifikan..
utk membantu kewangan FA negeri.
aku x nampak.
Kalau dlm pengurusan kewangan skuad kebangsaan..
pada aku ok kot.
Banyak duit dihabiskan utk frienly dsb.nya..
Tapi, mana Pestabola Merdeka???
Tp, aku puji Presiden keluar duit sendiri utk taja HM A ke Slovakia.
Walau mcm2 cerita x best ada.
Lebih banyak tindakan yg x konvensional cam ni diperlukan.

sy rase untuk mnjadi ssebuah klab yg d sbut profesional mestilah kne buang skap kbergantungan kpd FA Negri mhupun FAM,
sbab tak sharusnya klab pakai duit rakyat ntuk menyokong kwangan klab,
klab knelah cari duit sndiri macm cari yg dpat brsumber drpd main sponsor, penjualan merchandise, penjualan tiket, jual saham ataupon yg lain2 nya.
dan sebuah klab mestilah d menej mcm syarikat yg bkrja bkan untuk buang duit tp ntuk cari duit.
dan kepengurusan liga hrus d pisahkan drpd FAM,
sbab bla FAM msh memegang Otoriti penuh trhdp liga, smpai bla2 pon klab takkan dpt menghidupi drinya sndiri. sbb bla sbuah klab dah brgnti mnjadi syarikat mka scara x lngsung syarikat akan sdaya upaya ntok mndaptkn profit sbnyak2nya klu bleh ambik krj CEO Petronas ke, Proton ke wat duduk kat dwan pengarah, n sy prcya kes2 rasuah akan dpt brkurang. ambil contoh mcam kat indo,
ISL di menej oleh sbuah syarikat yg brnma P.T Liga Indonesia (P.T adlh perseroan terbatas sma dgn sdn.bhd. kat m'sia).
dan klab d indo d haramkan mmakai duit FA negri atopun PSSI,
Walaupun ade jgk yg msih dpt duit dr FA Negri, tp jmlahnya sikit jer...itupun d khas kan kpd klab promotion shj.,
itulah sbab knapa klab kat sna mestilah sbuah syarikat yg dpat mndtangkan duit bkan sebuah skadar Football Club jer yg hnya boleh menengadahkan tngan k atas..
sbb bila klab tak dpt cari duit sndiri smpai bla2 pon klab tak dpt prgi k mana2 plng jauh pun AFC Cup....

Salam bro,
Kerajaan negeri biasanya mengambil berat pencapaian pasukan bola sepak negeri.

slam blik bro,
1. mmng kat indo takda stu entiti yg mwakili ssebuah negri dan lebih mewakili kpd sbuah Majlis daerah/ bandar/bandaraya. dan kat sna mmng dlm 1 negri ada banyak klab dgn brbagai level liga.
2. smangat ntok mnyokong negri ttap ada dan pnyokong2 klab yg ada kat ssbuah negri akan brsatu padu bla dah ckap psal sokong FA negri. dan entiti yg mwakili negri kat indo dahpun terwakilkan dlm Team FA negri yg dorang ambik drpd player2 tmpatan yg brmain kat klab2 negri brkenaan atopun negri yg lain mcm cara Timnas gak, yg akan mngkuti tornemen PEKAN OLAHRAGA NASIONAL klo kat m'sia mcm SUKAN MALAYSIA camtu.
3. klu dah ckap psal sokong klab kat liga, dorang akan blik hnya kpada smangat mnyokong klab bandar dorang shj, dan oleh kerana ramainya pnduduk ssbuah bandar, jd dorang snang2 jer ntok mndptkan ahli fans club, dan lg sy prcya memang smangat n fanatism dorang dahpun semulajadi ada pda jiwa n hati mereka...klo x da mcmna mereka snggup brgadai nyawa demi mnjaga maruah klab/bandar dorang...., ambik contoh match uruguay vs. indo hr jumaat hdpan nie sbnyak 2000 pgwai polis d tmpatkan kat std. cuba bndingkan dgn match PERSEBAYA VS. AREMA F.C yg d kawal skurang2 nya 3000 pgwai polis walhal jarak bandaraya Surabaya ngan bandaraya Malang nie masih satu negri macm jarak Klang - KL, dan bila player team visitor nak buang air Kat tandas stdm jer kurang2 kna kwal 2 anggota polis siap ngan senapang M-16, nah dari situ anda boleh byngkan mcmn fanatism dorang...Dan kat sana smangat fanatism kpd klab dahpun d doktrinasi atao d ajarkan sjak masih duduk kat skolah rendah...dan tentunya akan trus d bwa hngga besar smpai tua nanti dan akan trus berkesinambungan hngga k anak cucu..dorang..
4. kat indo ada 5 level kompetisen.
-ISL (klub profesional)
-PREMIER DIVISION (klub semi profesional) dua liga nie d menej oleh Liga Indonesia Co.,Ltd.
-FIRST DIVISION
-2nd DIVISION
-3rd DIVISION (d menej oleh BADAN LIGA AMATEUR INDONESIA dan klab yg brtaraf amateur inilah shja yg d bnarkan mnggunakan duit FA Negri/bandar -perlu d ketahui kiranya kat indo nie bkan hanya negara/negri yg ada FA, kat majlis daerah/bandar/bandaraya pon ade FA jugak.) nah dripada liga amateur inilah pmbinaan bwah umur brmula. sbb liga amateur mnsyaratkan had umur ntok stiap divisenya. n psrta liga amateur jg brasal drpda klAb2 bndar bkan negri..
4. mestilah klu pmain timnas bukan drpd klab, kat mn PSSI nak cari.
